What is Safe Families?

Safe Families is a movement across all types of churches who have the shared vision to “create a world where children are safe and families transformed through radically compassionate communities. Our mission is to host vulnerable children and create extended family-like supports for desperate families through a community of devoted volunteers who are motivated by compassion to keep children safe and families intact.” (from www.safe-families.org)

Wayside Friends Church not only supports all vulnerable families, but we are called upon particularly to help fill the gap of providing care and support to families that are experiencing extra stress related to discrimination based on their or their child’s gender identity and/or sexuality. This has become and increasingly important need among families and our Circles of Support seek to offer mentoring, respite, tangible needs, and companionship.

Get Involved

Step One

Talk with our Safe Families Co-Ministry Leads, Michelle Akins or Cara Copeland about the need and your passions. They will help guide you in the process and pray with you about the next steps. Fill out this form to connect with them.

Step Two

Register with Safe Families National and be sure to connect your application to the McMinnville ministry – that is where our county’s branch is located. Click the “Be a Family Friend” link and this will allow you to be prepared for multiple levels of ministry when you are ready! If you think your household is interested in being a Host Family and you have already connected with Michelle or Cara about what this means, then click the Host Family link.

Step Three

Complete this application. This will allow you to be a volunteer with Lutheran Community Services NW. One part of the application gets mailed to McMinnville (or emailed to Allison Killeen at akilleen@lcsnw.org). The other page gets mailed to Salem to get you enrolled in a very specific background registry for Safe Families volunteers. You will be sent an email and letter requesting you to go get fingerprints within 4 weeks.  These can be done at the UPS store in Newberg by making an online appointment.
