“Pastor of our hearts
and Voice from the beginning:
you spoke before the world was,
we sprang to hear.

Now we languish,
we are wretched, ill.
Set us free!
We beseech,
make us well.”

Hildegard of Bingen, (1098-1179)

There are those times, aren’t there, when the weight of our own failures and faults overwhelm? Lent can be overwhelming when it forces me to dwell in those things that need to change. This prayer centers me first in the gracious goodness of God as gentle pastor, as Creator. It reminds me first that I am a creation pronounced “very good”.

Then I can ask to be set free.

For further reflection, today we’re reading John 16:12-15 in our community lenten reader.
