Leymah Gbowee

“Leymah was a single mother of four. Her county [Liberia] was going through a civil war: children were being recruited as soldiers and hundreds of thousands of people were dying. Leymah worked hard to help those who had been traumatized by the fighting… She became a leader of a program called the Women in Peacebuilding Network…

Leymah and the other women in her network pressured the factions at war to start peace talks. They gathered in front of the hotel where the negotiations were taking place to demand rapid progress. They even blocked the hotel exit to keep the negotiators from leaving until they had reached a deal.

When the Liberian civil war ended, Leymah was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. ‘When women gather,’ she says, ‘great things will happen.’”

Ask God in what unique ways you can be working towards peace and justice in our world.
